ED Quality & Leadership Course in Sardegna, Italy
350 European emergency medicine physicians joined us in Sardegna, Italy for a 2-day emergency medicine clinical and quality assurance course, September 30 – October 1, 2016. The goal of the course was to help emergency medicine physicians develop the clinical decision-making skills and quality assurance practices they need in order to deliver high-quality care to patients. Emergency medicine continues to develop throughout the world as an essential part of any efficient healthcare system. This course was designed for emergency clinicians who are current or wish to be future leaders in European emergency departments. In addition to clinical emergency medicine, the course also explored important leadership and systems-development strategies relevant to this growing field.CCTQA was a 12-hour (1.5 day) intensive professional development course for emergency medicine physicians delivered by the Harvard Medical School Office of Global Education (HMS OGE) and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians / Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The course was HMS OGE’s first emergency medicine course in Europe and was co-sponsored by the Region of Sardegna, Italy, the University Hospital of Cagliari (AOU Cagliari), and The University of Cagliari.Dr. Jonathan Edlow, course director & our vice-chair of emergency medicine, explained the goals he felt were accomplished:“My hope is that, in addition to providing valuable clinical and quality assurance knowledge and skills, CCTQA also provided participants with inspiration to be beacons of change within emergency medicine. Ideally, going forward, each physician, will dedicate themselves to furthering one of the important missions we discussed during the course: 1) emergency medicine education/training, 2) research leading to evidence-based practice, 3) quality systems improvement, or 4) effectively integrating emergency department operations within the larger healthcare system.”For those interested in more information, check out the course website here!
