Neurological Emergencies Education Program Development

Emergency physicians frequently see patients with neurological emergencies, including high risk neurological conditions such as stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions, traumatic brain injuries, seizures and central nervous system infections. Many EDs lack access to timely consultations with neurology specialists, and therefore emergency physicians need the skills to quickly identify and stabilize patients with high-risk conditions in the first hours of care. Research has shown that advances in emergency stroke treatment can improve patient outcomes and reduce death and disability (1, 2). Beyond stroke, early diagnosis of these other neurological conditions is fundamental to early treatment and improved patient outcomes.
