Medical education using high-fidelity simulation is a standard in Tuscan regional medical education programs, but rolling out region-wide access to training at fixed simulation centers presents obvious logistical and economic challenges. The Region of Tuscany and the University of Florence decided to launch a mobile simulation program in order to develop a high-quality and cost-effective method for delivering high-fidelity simulation training to a wider audience across the region. In this economic climate, finding more efficient ways to deliver training, while maintaining — and even, perhaps, improving — patient care, is essential.
HMFP worked with the regional health system through the University of Florence to plan and implement the following critical actions:
- Develop a business model and logistical plan for the creation of a mobile simulation program.
- Design and implemented a pilot program to test the feasibility of the program; the knowledge and experience gained during the pilot phase were to be used as the foundation of a larger regional program.
- After pilot phase, made necessary modifications to a mobile simulation practical implementation plan, regarding the equipment needs and logistical aspects of implementing such a program.
- Developed and implemented a research study to test the concept and hypothesis that in situ simulation, delivered by mobile means, and organized by a centralized training service, is not inferior to simulation training performed at a stationary simulation centers.
- Measured the financial benefits and significant cost savings to the healthcare system if a mobile simulation program.
